Tipranavir (TPV), sold under the brand name Aptivus®, is a nonpeptidic protease inhibitor drug used to treat HIV/AIDS in combination with ritonavir. It is used for patients with extensive previous treatment of those infected with HIV strains that have multiple protease inhibitor resistance. Tipranavir blocks the function of protease enzymes sothat the Gag and Gag-Pol polyprotein cannot be cleaved into individual active proteins, thus blocking the formation of infectious mature viral particles.
