Puppis, abbreviated Pup, is a constellation comprising 313 naked-eye stars in the Southern Hemisphere near Canis Major and Pyxis; its name is Latin for the 'poop deck' on a ship.
It was originally part of an obsolete constellation called Argo Navis, the Ship Argo, which was so large that it was eventually split into four separate smaller constellations, the others being Carina, Vela, and Malus, which later became Pyxis.
