This is a list of people who have made major practical breakthroughs in the development of the computer industry. If unlinked, these are placeholders until an article can be written. The summary should describe briefly the most famous thing the person did.
This list should include people who have invented a significantly new computer, operating system, or type of software, or significant business or licensing model. Let's keep this for the really great ones for now.
- Tim Berners-Lee ( - ) - Created World Wide Web, first web browser
- Sergei Brin ( - ) - Co-developer of page-rank search algorithm and co-founder of Google.
- David Filo (1966- ) - Co-founder of Yahoo, early web portal.
- Bill Gates (1955- ) - wrote BASIC interpreters for Altair and IBM systems, developed operating system for IBM personal computers, founded Microsoft Corporation.
- Steve Jobs (1955- ) - codeveloped Apple I computer, co-founded Apple Computer. Founded NeXT Computer Company. Led Apple Computer for introduction of iMac, iPod and iPhone.
- Larry Page ( - ) - Co-developer of page-rank search algorithm and co-founder of Google.
- Richard Stallman ( - ) - wrote many free programs for Unix environment, created GNU project and GNU General Public License.
- Linus Torvalds (1969-) - implemented Linux kernel, first monolithic, UNIX-like operating system which could run on an IBM compatible PC
- Steve Wozniak ( - ) - codeveloped Apple I computer, co-founded Apple Computer.
- Jerry Yang (1968- ) - Co-founder of Yahoo, early web portal.
