Orphan Black: Echoes is a spinoff of the successful television series Orphan Black that premiered in 2012.[1] The spinoff was announced in 2019, and was to have been broadcast on AMC in 2023. However, in October 2023, the release was pushed back to "sometime in 2024".[2]

The original series was broadcast by BBC America.[3] The new series has already been licensed for broadcast in several foreign markets.[4]

Although the new series will feature new characters with no overlap with the previous cast, John Fawcett, one of the creators of the original is a creator of the new series.[5] Anne Fishko will be in charge of the series' writing staff, and will be an executive producer.[3]

Kristin Ritter will lead the new cast, as well as serving as another producer.[1] Other actors include Amanda Fix, and Avan Jogia.[5][2]

The first season will have ten episodes, during which, according to the producer's synopsis, “It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal,”[6]

Reporting from Deadline magazine on July 28, 2022, implied Ritter would be playing a single individual, "with an unimaginable origin story".[7] Earlier reporting indicated that Ritter's boyfriend soon discovers she has an "unimaginable secret".[5] He is described as "a former Army medic and single father".

Amanda Fix's character is described as a smart, reckless, teenage girl, adopted by rich parents.[5]

On August 30, 2022, AMC Networks announced that British actor Keeley Hawes would also be joining the cast, playing a sympathetic scientist who confronts a tricky moral decision.[8][9]

Plot

A trailer was released in October 2023, showing the lead character, played by Kristin Ritter, waking up in 2052, not knowing who she is.[2]

While the scientific impetus to the original series was cloning technology, the impetus to the new series will be the printing of artificial organs with enhanced capabilities.[10]

Broadcasts

The series started streaming on the AMC cable channel in January 2024.[10]
