The Mississippi River is the longest river in the U.S. and North America at more than 2300 miles in length. It originates in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and meanders southward through the heart of the country, joining with several tributary rivers including the Missouri River and the Ohio River, before reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
