"410 Sack of Rome the first invasion of imperial Rome - which survived further attacks until 610 CE in the form of its Eastern Empire"

Oh dear, where to start?
  1. The Visigoths who sacked Rome in 410 weren't invaders. They were in Imperial service. Alaric was just trying to get better terms and conditions for his members. However, the Imperial mamgement's offer was derisory, so there was no alternative but to take industrial action, i.e. sack Rome.
  2. Rome was sacked again in 455, by Vandals, who actually were invaders. However, they went away again and Imperial rule was resumed.
  3. In 476 the last Western Emperor was forced to abdicate, and the West came nominally under the rule of the Eastern Emperors.
  4. In the 6th century this rule was made real under Justinian.
  5. What changed in 610?
  6. In 664 the Eastern Emperor Constans II actually visited Rome.
  7. In 751, after the Lombards conquered the main centre of Eastern government in Italy, the Emperor placed the Pope in charge of what was left.
  8. In 797, Emperor Constantine VI was deposed by his mother, who became Emperor (sic). The West refused to recognize this.
  9. In 800, the Pope appointed his own Emperor, Charlemagne.
  10. What's all this got to do with the history of political thought anyway? Same for much of the page.
