She could change her enemies into animals by using various potions, and was knowledgeable about drugs and herbs. She purified the Argonauts. She was also described as a witch or enchantress. In the Odyssey by the Greek poet Homer, Odysseus and his warriors stayed on her island for a year, and by getting advice from Hermes, Odysseus was able to have sex with her while avoiding the danger of her treachery by following instructions from the messenger god.
