It was designated in 1872, making it the world’s first national park (designating areas as protected lands had begun earlier in the century, but it can be argued that Yellowstone was the first true national park). It comprises 3,468 square miles. The park is probably best known for the geyser Old Faithful, which shoots hot water from a natural hot spring over one hundred feet into the air.
