It was originally part of a constellation called [[Argo Navis]], the Ship Argo, which was so large that it was eventually split into four separate smaller constellations, the others being [[Carina]], [[Vela]], and Malus, which later became [[Pyxis]].  Like a number of others whose former names are no longer in use, Argo Navis is called an [[obsolete constellation]].
