The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan (自由民主党 Jiyuu-Minshutoo, usually shortened to 自民党 Jimintoo) is a conservative political party which has held power at national level near-uninterrupted since 1955, other than a three-year spell in opposition between 2009 and 2012, and a brief period out of office in the early 1990s.
