| a) Why did you decide to be the director of these committees? What made you decide to apply?
| |
| I decided to apply to be a director for the three committees for the same reason I work at all the events I volunteer for. I like making people laugh and smile and enjoy themselves. Not being musical or artistic or funny in any real sense, I like to help make those sorts of events possible.

| I think it's important that we as a community and as a university have fun events that are non-alcoholic, and I think it's important that we have events that are community events. Whenever I think something important, I'm willing to put my hands where my heart is. I want to be a committee director because I support the mission of UPC and want to help it wherever possible. As such, I'm applying because I think I can be an asset to UPC.

| b) What leadership skills do you have that would be applicable to the positions for which you are applying?
| |
| I have had leadership roles in a fair few UPC events, including in both PK German, and in Comedy and Variety. I was a Program Coordinator for a small comedy show that filled the O'Hill Forum, I was Production Coordinator for the sold-out Carbon Leaf show, and I am currently Selections Coordinator for the Battle of the Bands. Additionally, I've done a lot of work in Cinematheque, coordinating the ushering schedule and helping track the attendance numbers and the budget.

| Outside of UPC, I've been involved in the launch of a non-profit group online, the Citizendium Foundation. The group is trying to create an expert-verified resource based off of WP. Essentially, I've had to do much of the same work we do here, in terms of figuring out what needs to be done, and delegating tasks and leading and encouraging people. I'm not in charge of the project, obviously, but I am on the Executive Committee.

| c) What is your vision for the committees for which you are applying?
| |
| I think that the goals of the committees I'm applying for are pretty similar, namely to bring low-cost, all-inclusive entertainment to the UVA community. Most other groups bring low-cost exclusive entertainment (events open only to clubs or groups or friends), or expensive all-inclusive entertainment (tickets to Larry the Cable Guy or Red Hot Chili Peppers aren't affordable to students).

| Additionally, our goal should be fostering UVA's community spirit. When UPC has a concert or comedy show or event, it's for everyone at UVA to enjoy. Going to a concert or a comedian or Springfest or Homecomings is a community event, and is a bonding experience for the UVA community.

| Additionally, I think we should try to make it more about the community. Some of the things that have worked really successfully for UPC have been student-based. For instance, when we brought Lee Camp, a UVA alumnus, we got the Cavalier Daily to play up the "UVA alum" angle, and we wound up filling the Forum. At Welcome Week, everyone stayed for Sons of Bill and Sparky's Flaw, but wandered away when the higher paid band came onto the scene. Similarly, when we did the Weathermen, we packed the house. Battle of the Bands is comparatively cheap, and I think it might be worth doing more events like that, and see if we can't use those sorts of approaches to get more "bang for our buck" in terms of entertained students.

| d) Please list the activities you plan on being involved with next during the 15-month term of this position and the weekly time commitments involved with each. How will you adjust your schedule to meet the commitments of UPC?

| I am currently a news writer at WUVA, which takes about 3-4 hours a week, all on Sunday afternoon. I likely won't be doing that in the 2007-2008 school year (when most of my term would be). Similarly, I write for Critical Mass, but that's only a few hours every other week. My time with the Citizendium Project basically consists of whatever I can squeeze in, and won't result in any conflicts, because it's completely flexible in terms of when I do what I need to do. I spend most of my extracurricular time involved in UPC anyways, and I'm confident that I can fit 10-15 hours a week into my schedule.

| Congress is taking issue with the amount of candy bars and soda pop in the nation's schools, worrying this might be to blame for the slight increase in childhood obesity over the last 4 years. CNN is reporting on a new plan before Congress that would establish standards on what can and can't be sold in schools. This comes in addition to existing rules that set limits on what schools can serve for breakfast and lunch in their cafeterias. But the plan could face some hurdles. The last attempt was stopped in its tracks by a 1983 court decision that limited federal authority to meal times in the cafeteria, and exempted vending machines and school stores from any such rules. Additionally, some schools rely heavily on vending machine income to run on tight budgets. The effort is also being discussed in 40 state legislatures.

| An intruder was arrested trying to gain access to the White House yesterday afternoon. The man jumped the fence and was caught within minutes by gun-wielding Secret Service agents. CNN reports that the man wore a T-shirt with an American flag and the message "God Bless America" and screamed that he was a terror victim. He also dropped a package, which was recovered by security officials. President Bush was inside the White House at the time.

| The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority has asked everyone in the area to take some minimal water conservation steps. They suggest not leaving the water running and watering your lawn every other day instead of everyday. NBC29 reports that while reserviors are full now, the worry is that this summer could see shortages if there isn't more rain in April and May.
