The literature on the History of the Republican Party is very large. This is a guide to the best resources. For the party as of 2007 see Republican Party (United States). See also related articles on the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Political Party Systems in the U.S. In the years after 2016 and earlier, numerous commentators have been predicting or anticipating the end of the Republican Party as it has existed in the Fifth Party System, suggesting the possible emergence of a new, Sixth Party System. As of the Presidential election of 2020, no such development has occurred. Various commentators have offered explanations for why ([1]).
