Misenum was the base of the Roman fleet in the Bay of Naples during the 1st centuries B.C. and A.D. It was founded in the 1st century B.C. by Agrippa and ancillary buildings were established along with military buildings, creating a community which was popular amongst Rome's elite. The Emperor Tiberius died at Misenum in A.D. 37.[1][2] In A.D. 79 Pliny the Elder was admiral of the Roman fleet at Misenum when Vesuvius erupted. He died while taking the fleet to investigate the eruption and help the inhabitants of nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum.[3]
