Data Encryption Standard: A block cipher specification issued by the U.S. government in 1976, intended for sensitive but unclassified data. It is now obsolescent, succeeded by the Advanced Encryption Standard, but still used in commercial systems. [e]
- diethylstilbestrol: Diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen, was believed to prevent miscarriages in women until a 1953 randomized controlled trial proved it did not; a 1971 study established that it increased in utero cancer risks for fetuses whose mothers had taken it [e]
