Yamagata prefecture (山形県 Yamagata-ken) is an area of Japan located in the Tohoku region of Honshu island. Its population was 1,208,000 in 2006.[1]

Yamagata prefecture shares its name with its own capital city, Yamagata (山形市 Yamagata-shi).
