A web server is ambiguous term designing:
- Either a piece of software that can handle HTTP requests in order to generate a web page in HTML (sometimes in other languages) ;
- Or a computer (or even a set of computers) whose main task is to host web sites (running web server software that handles the HTTP requests).
Web server computers are connected to the internet (for external usage, called extranet) or in to a local network (for internal usage, or intranet).
