This is an... ''odd'' exercise.  After leaving this for a while and coming back with fresh eyes, I feel some of the ones I've revised look more oddly placed.  Come back again, and they seem logical again.  More gaps appear, as do more conundrums.  Right now, I'm looking at Astronomy and thinking "Why is that at the top level - shouldn't it be a subset of physics?"  And then I look at [CZ:NWR] and wonder about it becoming Astronomy and Space Exploration - which would mean it ''couldn't'' be a subset of physics alone.  My brainwave of putting Fashion as a subgroup of Business faltered when I thought about [[kilt]]s and other traditional dress.  And having a Fashion subgroup for each area in Area Studies doesn't make sense either.

Hmmm... How do directory projets handle this?  Might be worthwhile having a look at DMOZ and the like.

The following list started off as a breakdown of current Workgroups (as at 8th August '07). While maintaining the very top-level groups, I've incorporated some others from the CZ:New Workgroup Requests page, moved some around, added some others, suggested sub-workgroups, included examples of article titles that might fall within sub workgroups, and generally, meddled.

Some of the existing headings/groups seem somewhat arbitrary. Why is Economics in Social Sciences, for example, while the very closely related Business is in Applied Arts and Sciences? Literature is in Humanities, not Arts... surely a case could be made for either.

At least at first glance, obvious workgroups seem to be missing. Dog (along with all other animals) should surely be in a subgroup of Biology, rather than being in the first level underneath that heading? Wheat is also in Biology - and in Agriculture. Agriculture is appropriate, of course, but Biology? What about non-food/non-commercial plants, which presumably shouldn't be in an Agriculture group.

Anyway, here's what I'll be proposing for discussion... At the top level are the main workgroups (as per existing workgroups with two new additions, Area Studies and Citizendium Projects). Each workgroup would likely have one or more subgroups. Some subgroups would have one or more sub-subgroups - and so on. Any one article, obviously, will likely fit into several subgroups. But - subgroups can only be a member of a single parent subgroup. (At least, I think that's how it works...)

Further comments

This is an... odd exercise. After leaving this for a while and coming back with fresh eyes, I feel some of the ones I've revised look more oddly placed. Come back again, and they seem logical again. More gaps appear, as do more conundrums. Right now, I'm looking at Astronomy and thinking "Why is that at the top level - shouldn't it be a subset of physics?" And then I look at [CZ:NWR] and wonder about it becoming Astronomy and Space Exploration - which would mean it couldn't be a subset of physics alone. My brainwave of putting Fashion as a subgroup of Business faltered when I thought about kilts and other traditional dress. And having a Fashion subgroup for each area in Area Studies doesn't make sense either.

Hmmm... How do directory projects handle this? Might be worthwhile having a look at DMOZ and the like.

(Later again) I've played around a bit with this since and had some input from User:Chris Day. Please feel free to make suggestions on the talk page. I'm still thinking a good luck at DMOZ or possibly even Yahoo's category structure might be a good idea - will have a look at this again.
