Structure of article
This article should cover composers, patrons, venues for music making, reception of music, music publishing, music theory, criticism, etc. I would propose to structure the article in terms of chronology, which would leave room for the discussion of the aforementioned aspects in each time slot. A possible breakup of the chronology could be:
- Beginnings
- Electorate of Brandenburg
- Prussia
- Up to Frederick II
- Frederick II's reign: 1740-1786
- Frederick William II and Fredrick William III: 1786-1840
- 1840-1919
- Weimar Republic
- Nazi Germany
- Post-War: 1945-1990 [departing from the strict timeline here to allow for a seperate discussion of West and East Berlin]
- West Berlin
- East Berlin
- 1990 - present
I suggest to add these subcategories to the article as we go along. Matthias Röder 04:40, 12 August 2007 (CDT)
- The article should also include the role of the music universities and academies. It could especially be interesting in respect to the separation of Germany. (HdK, now UdK in the west, Hanns Eisler in the east.) In addition, I have the Handbuch Deutsche Musiker 1933 bis 1945 ("Compendium of German Musicians 1933 to 1945") by Fred K. Prieberg as pdf. So I can also add content myself. One more thing: the chapter "After reunification" should also include a paragraph on the widespread illegal underground club scene since 1990, especially in the 1990s. Some of those clubs became world famous (like the Rio, Planet, Boudoir, Im Eimer, Toaster, Boogaloo [now the Sage Club], the various 103 and WMF locations). PS: The chapter title "1990 – present" should be sufficient, because Wiedervereinigung ("reunification") is only an inofficial term. Arne Eickenberg talk 09:57, 12 August 2007 (CDT)
Hi Arne! Many thanks for your thoughtful suggestions! I agree with you that the role of the universities and acadmies is crucial when talking about Berlin. I intend to include a thorough discussion as I keep working on the text. They don't show up in the section headings because I decided to arrange the article chronologically and use the rulers' names as headings - at least for the 18th and 19th centuries. But they will definetly be included!
I tried to find a competent author for the underground culture of Berlin over at WP when I started the article there, but unfortunately no one volunteered. You seem to know a lot about this topic, would you like to start that section? All the best, Matthias Matthias Röder 10:36, 12 August 2007 (CDT)
