Object history Commissioned as a benefit for the Philadelphia Art Union in 1851. Joined the collection of Joseph Harrison Jr. ca. 1855; auctioned after his death in 1912. Purchased by Charles L. Hamilton and owned until his death. Hamilton's heirs donated the painting to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation in April 1959. In a ceremony at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia on April 29, 1959 Governor J. Lindsay Almond accepted the Rothermel painting from the Hamilton family and presented it to James S. Easley, President of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation. It remains on display with the Foundation today.
Exhibition history May 1852: U.S. Capitol Rotunda; March–June 1865: Northwestern Sanitary Fair; 1912–1956: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; 1959–1976: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; 1976–present: Red Hill Patrick Henry National Memorial.
