Summary
Description |
This image is a version of a photograph of one side (the front side) of the 1947 Nobel Prize Medal in Physics presented to Sir Edward Victor Appleton by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on display at the University of Edinburgh. The Medal was on display in Appleton Tower, University of Edinburgh, where it was photographed by David Monniaux, who uploaded his digitized photograph to Wikipedia in 2005. It is a photograph of the "front side" of the medal that Appleton received, not the "back side," which is specific to the medals for Physics and Chemistry. Note that the Economics prize uses a different medal, see [1]. |

The medal design itself is in the public domain in the United States (where the Wikimedia Foundation is located), because it was published before 1923. It can also be used in the UK, under UK Freedom of panorama laws, since this photograph is of a sculptural work on permanent public display. It may not be in the public domain (PD) in some other nations. The design may be subject to Nobel Foundation trademarks. The sculptor Erik Lindberg died in 1966, meaning that in 2037 this image can be moved to Commons.
This image is in the public domain in the United States because it was first published outside the United States prior to January 1, 1929. Other jurisdictions have other rules. Also note that this image may not be in the public domain in the 9th Circuit if it was first published on or after July 1, 1909 in noncompliance with US formalities, unless the author is known to have died in 1953 or earlier (more than 70 years ago) or the work was created in 1903 or earlier (more than 120 years ago.)[2]
